I expected it to be mandatory.

hello, I remember reading something about this research being made optional in an earlier update, hence the quest would have been made declineable (who does not want an expansion anyhow ...?)
thing is ... while we research the expansion (and wait for needed resources to be produced) it block our regular repeatable quests - took me one week ...
