Blog post Upgrading buildings

Good day traveler,

I’m glad to see you’re back and well for another lesson. Like I mentioned last week, today’s lecture will deal with upgrading buildings.

As you might already know, space can be very limited in Elvenar. Whether it is due to a lack of technology or a small population, You will start off with a small plot of land. As your city develops and gains new skills, knowledge and people you will be able to slowly expand your territory. Yet, like any other blooming civilization you will soon realize that your demands will grow faster than the space you have available.

While some Humans and Elves will try to sidestep this problem by finishing encounters in provinces on the world map (and thus gaining expansions) there is a simpler way to grow. Every longstanding city knows that upgrading your buildings is the key to success. Upgrades can either increase production or population depending on the type of building.

Take for example an Elven Residence: at level 1 it houses 31 Elves while at level 7 it houses 100. This means that you can have more Elves in almost the same amount of space you started with. Although upgrades are a smart use of land it doesn’t mean that all buildings will be the same size after the boost. In the last example an Elven Residence stays the same size (2x2) until level 4 (2x3).

There are also other requirements you must have before you can upgrade certain buildings. In some cases you will have to pay a specific type of good or unlock a certain technology before you can improve a construction. Let’s go back to the residences to illustrate my point: once you reach level 7 you will have to research another technology to reach level 8.

As you can see, upgrading buildings is easy and quick and it should be an essential part of your strategy if you want to develop a well-rounded city. Before I leave you I want us to check back on the Elven city I showed you last week. This elf is already making use of what I just showed you, he optimized space by enhancing his buildings.

I’ll see you soon. Until then take care!
