Having to pay diamonds to produce copper

I have reached a point where my mines are telling me I have to pay diamonds to produce copper.

In view of the fact that producing copper is an exceedingly slow and boring part of the game why do I now have to pay to do so? I have already had to pay diamonds to upgrade the Dwarven Portal so that I had enough storage to continue playing but this new development really takes the biscuit and spells the end of my time here :(

Are you sure you have the resources needed to produce copper ? Usually that is the problem when the game ask for diamonds.
