Communication [Forwarded] In game chat

Something I feel is lacking from this game is a sense of connection with the other players. Something I think that would improve that is an in game chat system whereby players can 1) be automatically placed into a community chat room. 2) create their own chat rooms 3) add friends and 'whisper' them directly

This is a current feature on The-West, another Innogame some people may be familiar with. I have provided an example of what the chat system is like there. Although there are currently no alliances or similar groups in place in Elvenar, I think it would be good to implement such a system where players can form groups or 'clans' where they can chat, whisper other players and even join large community groups where new players could seek immediate help and others can use as a place to hang out :)

1) In The-West, there are a few chat room called "Saloon #" where at any given time there are usually 30-40 players. Now if you notice there are only 10 people in Saloon 4 above despite there likely being far more than 10 players online, the reason for this is that as there are less players online (notice this screencap was taken at 2am game time) any players that log in will be placed into fewer rooms in order to maintain the 30-40 players in one room. Of course 30-40 is a just a number that can be changed, but it seems to work on The-West and at any given time you can usually find people willing to answer your questions, talk about TV, sports, you name it :p

2) The room called SuperSecretRoom above is an option available on The-West where you can make your own room by typing "/join room_name_here" and you can then tell others the room name and they can join by typing the same /join command.

3) Another feature offered by The-West chat system is the ability to add friends and chat with them directly.

TL;DR: It's nice to feel like part of a community when playing a game, and a chat system accomplishes that.

I definitely agree that this would improve the sense of community. However, these chats would have to be moderated - how do you propose this be handled? This has been a massive barrier in the past - since Inno boasts family-friendly gaming.

The way this works on T-W is that players can click on a player's name to report them. A team of in game moderators who are volunteers from the player base review the report and issue a punishment if there was an infraction. Players who incur an infraction may receive a warning, temporary ban or be permanently banned from the game. Over the 7 years that I have been playing T-W, I have witnessed the odd person entering chats and shouting obscenities however for the most part the chat rooms are pretty clean.

There is also the option to place the player on your ignore list to prevent yourself from seeing their messages.

My chief concern is that since these chats would almost have to be global is that it would lead to a great deal of spam - that is, automated bot messages. Without alliances currently in place (or tribes, clans, etc.) global and private would be the only immediate option. This issue permeates the entire industry when chats are implemented on this scale. I worry that the same will happen here, which I would rather prefer to avoid.

That is a possibility, but in 7 years of playing T-W I have never seen anybody send automated bot messages of any sorts. Yes sometimes somebody will spam nonsense, but simply placing them on ignore fixes that issue.

The chat seems to work similar on other Inno games, such as FoE. I agree it'd be a good addition, but I think it may not be highest priority. Folks can still message each other in the game and use the forum for communication. Game improvements/additions vs. communication improvements/additions may be more important at the beginning.

I am getting really down about not having a chat. I know that this is a family friendly game, but com'on, we are going into the world map and killing things. If you could write a sort of Bleep out for swear words like other games have and then leave it up to the people to report people who are being antisocial and just Boot them out. But we do need chat.

+1 Obscenities can be deleted. Hateful religious or political texts are harder so are spammers.
